Character Name and Series: CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow - Pirates of the Caribbean Age: 35 Gender: Male
Background Info
Although Jack has pirate ancestry, owns a piece of eight, and gives the impression of being pirate through and through, Jack was originally a captain of the East India trading company, but became disillusioned by their methods and was branded a traitor when he refused to transport slaves according to orders. His ship, the Wicked Wench, was sunk, and he bargained with Davy Jones to have it raised. He was given thirteen years of captaincy aboard his ship, which he rechristened the Black Pearl, but only served for one before he was mutinied against in an uprising led by his first mate and continuing rival Hector Barbossa, who took advantage of Sparrow’s naivety, gained the coordinates for the Isla de Muerta, and took control of the ship. Jack’s only supporter was thrown overboard, weighted by a canon, and Jack himself was marooned on a desert island, armed with a pistol with only one shot. Ten years later, he lodged the bullet he had been given by Barbossa in his rival’s heart, and regained the Black Pearl, along with the crew he raised in Tortuga with William Turner. Sparrow began to be pursued by Davy Jones once his thirteen years of captaincy were over, despite having only served three. A desperate race took place, with Jack and many of his accomplices-turned-rivals (turned accomplices again) competing for the treasure chest containing Jones’ heart. Sparrow hoped to gain possession of Jones’ heart in order to gain leverage over his pursuer, however he failed in his attempt. Thanks to some underhandedness from Elisabeth Swann, Jack was swallowed by Davy Jones’ Kraken, and became stuck in Limbo, or ‘Davy Jones’ Locker’, where he suffered a variety of delusions until his friends came to free him.
Personality
Jack’s past paints the picture of a man makes the best of whatever circumstances he ends up in. He did not become a pirate by choice, but his assumed betrayal of the East India Trading Company, his branding as a pirate and subsequent dismissal led him to try his hand at the lot he was given by his former superiors. The raising of the Wench shows not only Jack’s bond with his ship, but his desire to send a message to the EITC – to stick two fingers up at them, so to speak, by using one of their ships to conduct activities the company condemned. This, and his tracking of the Pearl to take it back after Barbossa’s mutiny, shows Jack’s tenacity in trying to keep hold of what he believes is truly his. Throughout the Pirates films, Jack seems to have a questionable code of morals. However, he expresses a sentiment in the first film which particularly applies to him: that it is possible to be ‘a pirate and a good man.’ He is an eccentric, flamboyant, slightly-unhinged bumbling fool, but he seems to have a good head on his shoulders – rather, it seems to be that much of his behaviour is an act to hide the presence of a quick tactical mind. His methods seem accidental, and beneficial solely to himself from the outsider’s point of view, but he mostly manages to look after the well-bring of his friends and crewmates in the process. Despite this, he never seems to act deliberately to save someone – that is, you’ll never see Jack set off on a heroic rescue mission, unless it figures into his plans. Otherwise, he’ll wait until the ‘opportune’ moment to save someone, normally managing to set another aspect of a plan in action while he does so. The more players in a sequence of events, the more calculating Jack must be, and this often sees him taking a side that appears unfavourable to his allies. Jack is not cruel. At his core, Jack is an ethical person, and it is this fact that most characters find difficult to accept. The realisation that he was expected to transport slaves caused him to become disillusioned by civilised life and the English Crown, to whom he owed his allegiance as an EITC captain: there was no need for him to pay this allegiance once his commission was revoked. However, because Jack is a pirate, others attempt to drive him to do the right thing, most noticeably in the case of Elisabeth’s imprisoning him aboard the doomed Black Pearl. This had more of a negative effect than she intended, and caused Jack to be driven into a period of pain and madness.
Abilities/Weaponry: (extended from original LSG application)
You wouldn’t think so to look at him, but Jack’s a surprisingly good strategist. Sword fighting, gun shooting, and general double-crossing-weasely-ness are all part of the pirate package. Jack always carries – at the very least – a sword and a pistol. Occasionally, he’ll stow a smaller knife in his boot or something. No matter the situation, he is more than capable of defending himself. More often then not, however, Jack will use his wit (and superior vocabulary) to beat, overcome, and befuddle his enemies, rather than resorting to steel He is a master thief, an excellent liar, and can manipulate others towards his own ends with ease. Sadly his sense of direction leaves a lot to be desired.

Anything you try to tell him, he'll laugh off. Hugging/Kissing/Nicknaming: All three fine for the girls, especially the pretty ones. As for the boys? Anything more than nicknaming will be met with a disapproving look :| Maiming/Killing/Death: Contact me first. I'd say no to maiming, but then again... he's a pirate, he can deal with it. Other facts:Keep anything shiny out of his reach. He's likely to pocket it |
